Sourcing

Today, France is one of the main producers of the fine fragrance quality, with an annual production of around 60 MT. Today, there are 28 species of Lavender; all grow in dry, sunny and rocky regions. The strands are more fragrant when they are harvested just before the flowers bloom.

Below 400 meters altitude, fine lavender cannot grow, only lavandin grows at sea level.
Lavandin is a hybrid of two lavender species giving much higher yields per hectare but with more camphoraceous notes explaining why it is more used in consumer goods/household segments.

Bulgaria annual production is around 250 MT and offers a less expensive quality, more dedicated to consumer goods application.

France

In Provence, dsm-firmenich supports its partner to develop a diversification program of Lavandin, Lavender and other herbs such as clary sage and coriander. dsm-firmenich is a member of the lavender endowment fund to help protect this iconic supply chain in Provence. In a field of fine lavender, there may be several different varying shades of blue. The association of aromatic products ensures a higher and more regular income for farmers. Lavender in France is picked mechanically "ensilage", in the same way as wheat, and distilled locally before being purchased by dsm-firmenich.
