Sourcing

Patchouli is a foundational perfumery ingredient, celebrated for its rich woody earthy and mossy character. Each year the world produces around 1,800 to 2,000 MT of patchouli oil, sourced mainly from Pogostemon cablin and cultivated with care by dedicated smallholder farmers. The crop offers about 2.5 harvests per year and its oil is crafted through steam distillation, yielding between 1.5 and 2.5 percent. As a crop that naturally thrives when soils are managed thoughtfully, patchouli encourages responsible rotation and good agricultural practices. This ongoing renewal of cultivation areas supports long term quality and offers an opportunity for continuous improvement in farming ecosystems, helping ensure a stable and forward looking supply for the perfumery world.

Indonesia

Indonesia is the leading global supplier of patchouli, delivering around 90 percent of the world’s volume which represents approximately 1,600 MT each year. Production is centered in Sulawesi which contributes 80 to 85 percent while Sumatra, Java and Kalimantan provide the remaining share. Over time cultivation has naturally shifted between islands as farmers explore the most suitable growing environments, making Sulawesi the vibrant heart of today’s production landscape. Across these regions farming communities skillfully manage the full journey of patchouli from seedling preparation through harvest drying and distillation, achieving oil yields that typically range from 1.2 to 1.8 percent depending on local conditions. While the supply chain evolves in response to soil pressure and environmental challenges, Indonesia continues to strengthen its leadership through resilient farming practices and a growing commitment to sustainable development, helping secure the long term vitality of its patchouli sector.
